Newcastle United have completed the signing of 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax Amsterdam on a five-year contract, the club confirmed on Thursday. The deal, which runs until 2031, could reach a total of €27 million, according to Ajax. Steur becomes the third major arrival at St. James’ Park this summer, following the signings of Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Touré.
Steur joined the Ajax youth academy at the age of seven and has already made appearances in the Eredivisie and the Champions League. He has also represented the Netherlands at the Under-19 level, gaining international experience alongside his club commitments. His arrival adds further depth and potential to Newcastle’s midfield options.
Ajax described Steur as a highly promising talent, and the player himself expressed his enthusiasm for the move. He stated that playing in the Premier League was a “dream” and that it was difficult to turn down an offer from a club like Newcastle. He was recently ranked 24th in L’Équipe’s top 30 players born in 2008, highlighting his potential.
Newcastle have been active in the transfer market this summer, demonstrating their ambition to build a competitive squad. The signing of Jaouen from a Ligue 2 club for a reported €28.5 million and Touré for €50 million, alongside Steur, signals a significant investment in young talent. These additions will likely strengthen Newcastle's challenge for European qualification and establish a long-term foundation for the team. The club will hope Steur’s development continues on Tyneside, adding another dynamic player to Eddie Howe’s squad.
