- FC Nürnberg have completed the signing of Alexios Kalogeropoulos on a free transfer from Olympiacos, the club confirmed. The move comes on the same day captain Fabio Gruber departed for Mainz, leaving a vacancy in the centre of Nürnberg’s defence. Kalogeropoulos, a 21-year-old Greek centre-back, joins after his contract with the Greek Super League champions expired.
Despite limited first-team opportunities with Olympiacos, where he made 17 appearances, Kalogeropoulos has established himself as a key figure for the Greek national team at under-21 level. He captains the side, recently leading them to a victory over Germany in a U21 European Championship qualifier played in Jena. This international experience is seen as a valuable asset by the Nürnberg coaching staff.
Nürnberg’s board member, Joti Chatzialexiou, highlighted the club’s long-term interest in the player. According to Chatzialexiou, the club has been monitoring Kalogeropoulos for some time, impressed by his aerial ability, strength in duels, and composure in possession. He described the defender as a “young, developmental centre-back” with existing experience.
Kalogeropoulos expressed his enthusiasm about joining 1. FC Nürnberg, citing the club’s reputation for developing young talent. In his first interview as a Nürnberg player, he stated his desire to gain experience abroad and mature into a seasoned professional within the Bundesliga. He believes Nürnberg provides the ideal environment for his continued growth.
The arrival of Kalogeropoulos addresses an immediate need following Gruber’s transfer, providing competition and depth in the central defensive positions. This move signals Nürnberg’s commitment to investing in young players with international pedigree, potentially strengthening their squad for the upcoming season.
