RB Leipzig can secure qualification for next season's Champions League with a victory away to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, according to a report from MDR. With three Bundesliga matches remaining, Leipzig require only one more win to mathematically guarantee a top-four finish and a place in Europe's premier club competition. Coach Ole Werner's side currently sits third in the table, five points clear of fifth-placed Hoffenheim.
Leipzig's first opportunity to seal the deal comes at the BayArena against a Leverkusen side that finds itself under significant pressure. The hosts are seven points adrift of Leipzig in sixth and have lost their last two home matches in all competitions, against Augsburg in the league and Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal. A defeat for Leverkusen would severely damage their own hopes of returning to the Champions League.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Werner acknowledged his team's motivation is palpable. "The motivation to achieve the goal is noticeable," he said. "We have done a good job up to this point. The decisive part is coming now." He dismissed the idea of copying the approaches of Augsburg or Bayern, teams that recently beat Leverkusen at home, stating his focus is on his own squad's performance. Werner did, however, highlight the quality of Saturday's opponents, pointing to their recent draw against Bayern Munich and their high volume of shots in recent games.
The match promises to be an open, attacking contest. Both teams have scored 62 league goals this season, the joint-fourth best offensive record in the Bundesliga. Leipzig have created the second-most clear-cut chances in the division, while Leverkusen rank second for expected goals (xG).
Leipzig could receive a timely boost with the return of key defenders. According to the report, centre-back Castello Lukeba, who has been managing adductor problems, has completed full training this week. Captain David Raum, sidelined with a groin issue, also returned to full team training on Wednesday. A final decision on their availability will be made after Friday's final session.
For Leverkusen, the context is fraught with uncertainty. Coach Kasper Hjulmand, who was appointed during the current campaign, is under scrutiny regarding his future at the club. He called for maximum commitment from his players, stating, "We have a shared responsibility for the fire and motivation on the pitch." He emphasized that Champions League qualification remains the clear objective, adding, "We have a lot to win. We have three games and with these three games we can get into the Champions League next year."
The outcome carries major implications for both clubs' summer planning and financial footing. Securing Champions League football would provide Leipzig with crucial revenue and prestige to retain and attract players, while failure for Leverkusen would represent a significant setback in a season that began with higher aspirations.
