Cagliari have secured the long-term future of teenage striker Paul Mendy, extending the Senegalese forward's contract until the summer of 2031. The club confirmed the new deal, which comes just weeks after the 19-year-old made a stunning impact with a debut brace in Serie A. Mendy scored twice within eight minutes against Atalanta in late April during his first start for the senior side, marking a rapid ascent for a player only signed in the January transfer window.
Mendy arrived at Cagliari from Senegalese club ASC Bambey earlier this year, an acquisition driven by the club's technical coordinator for the Under-20 side, Roberto Muzzi. According to club sources, the former striker identified Mendy's potential and pushed for his integration into the Sardinian club's youth system. His adaptation has been swift, with the player quickly learning Italian and impressing coaches with his work ethic and physical attributes as a modern, left-footed forward.
His progression through the ranks accelerated under coach Fabio Pisacane, who previously managed Cagliari's youth team to a Coppa Italia title. Mendy tallied 14 goals and three assists in 28 appearances for the Under-20 side this season, earning increasingly regular call-ups to the first-team squad. His senior debut came as a substitute against Napoli in March, with subsequent brief appearances against Sassuolo, Cremonese, and Inter preceding his landmark start against Atalanta.
With that double against Atalanta, Mendy became the third-youngest player to score a multiple-goal debut in Serie A in the three-points-for-a-win era, behind only Francesco Grandolfo and Lorenzo Venturino. His emergence is seen as part of a successful strategy under Pisacane to promote youth, following a season where Cagliari's attack has been hampered by injuries. The contract extension, finalized on March 5th, represents a significant show of faith in Mendy's development pathway at the club.
For Cagliari, securing Mendy on a long-term deal protects a valuable asset and provides stability for a promising talent they believe can grow within their project. For the player, the commitment offers the security to continue his development in a familiar environment after a whirlwind introduction to top-flight football. His immediate task will be to build on his explosive introduction and establish himself as a consistent option in Cagliari's attacking lineup for the seasons ahead.
