Nico Gonzalez's proposed permanent move to Atletico Madrid has been thrown into doubt after a muscle injury ruled the Juventus loanee out for approximately four weeks. According to reports from Italy, the injury means the Argentine winger will not meet the appearance threshold required to trigger an automatic purchase clause set at 32 million euros. Atletico Madrid has formally notified Juventus of the player's condition and is now expected to seek a renegotiation of the transfer fee.
The 26-year-old was just two La Liga appearances away from activating the mandatory buy option agreed upon when he joined Diego Simeone's side last summer. Juventus had been counting on that guaranteed income to fund their own summer transfer plans, but that financial certainty has now evaporated. Instead, Atletico's objective, as reported, is to reduce the cost of the acquisition by at least a third, opening a new phase of negotiations between the clubs.
Despite the setback, Gonzalez has been a key figure for Atletico this season, making 39 appearances and scoring five goals, all in the league. He had cemented his status as one of Simeone's trusted players, with his recent form even boosting hopes of securing a more permanent future in Madrid. His injury, however, sidelines him for the remainder of the domestic campaign, including a crucial Champions League semi-final against Arsenal, forcing Simeone to turn to alternatives like Samuel Lino and Rodrigo Riquelme.
The situation leaves all parties at a crossroads. Juventus, while missing out on the expected windfall, would not necessarily be opposed to Gonzalez's return. Italy's national team coach Luciano Spalletti is reportedly an admirer of the player's profile, and he could offer a solution on the right flank for the Bianconeri next season. For his part, Gonzalez now faces a race to be fit for the Copa America with Argentina this summer, having recently returned to Lionel Scaloni's squad after an absence.
The most likely outcome now appears to be a renegotiated transfer. The basis for a compromise, according to the reports, could be a fee in the region of 25 million euros, a figure that would see Juventus still turn a profit on the player they signed from Stuttgart in 2021 while allowing Atletico to secure his services at a reduced cost. The injury has simply shifted the transfer from an automatic procedure to a fresh round of talks, with Gonzalez's future hanging in the balance until an agreement is struck.
