Romero is familiar with Italian football, having previously played for Genoa and Atalanta for three seasons, making a total of 88 appearances. His time at Atalanta culminated in a club-record sale to Tottenham for a reported €50 million plus €5 million in add-ons, netting Atalanta a profit of approximately €38 million. While he has achieved success with Argentina, winning a World Cup and Copa America, his trophy haul with Tottenham has been less impressive, limited to a Europa League title.
The 25-year-old was appointed captain of Tottenham earlier last season, but the club endured a disappointing campaign, finishing 17th in the Premier League. Romero’s season was cut short in April due to a knee injury, and his decision to return to Argentina for rehabilitation drew criticism from some Tottenham supporters.
