Inter Milan have reached a full agreement on personal terms with Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, according to reports from Italy. The Nerazzurri have made the 27-year-old Italian their primary target to succeed Yann Sommer, whose contract expires in June, and have now secured an understanding with the player and his representatives on both the length of the proposed contract and his salary. The deal, however, remains incomplete as the two clubs have yet to agree on a transfer fee.
Vicario has been a long-standing target for Inter, who came close to signing him before his move from Empoli to Tottenham in the summer of 2023. At that time, the protracted nature of Andre Onana's 50 million euro transfer to Manchester United reportedly influenced Vicario's decision to pursue a move to the Premier League, a league he had long been fascinated by. After a season in England, the goalkeeper is now reportedly ready to return to Serie A.
The final hurdle is an agreement between Inter and Tottenham. The Italian club's pursuit could be significantly influenced by Tottenham's Premier League standing; reports suggest Spurs' asking price would be considerably lower if the club were to suffer a shock relegation, a scenario that would benefit Inter. Tottenham currently sit just above the relegation zone in 18th place. Meanwhile, Inter must also resolve the future of their current backup, Josep Martinez.
Martinez, promoted from Genoa last summer, has impressed in his recent opportunities, keeping a clean sheet against Cagliari and playing a key role in the Coppa Italia comeback against Como. His performances have convinced the club of his potential, but the Spaniard is understood to be keen on regular first-team football after two seasons as a deputy. It is considered unlikely he would accept another season as a clear number two, even with Sommer's imminent departure.
The situation presents a revolving door in goal for Inter. With Sommer leaving, Vicario arriving, and Martinez's future uncertain, the club faces a pivotal decision. Retaining Martinez as competition for Vicario would be ideal for Inter's depth, but the player's ambition may necessitate a sale. The coming weeks will be crucial as Inter work to finalize the Vicario deal with Tottenham and chart a path forward for their goalkeeping department.
