Inter face pivotal summer decision over Calhanoglu's future
Inter Milan must resolve the future of key midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu this summer, with the Turkish international's contract set to expire in June 2027. According to reports from Italy, the club's hierarchy, alongside manager Cristian Chivu and the player's agent Gordon Stipic, will soon hold decisive talks to determine whether to offer a new deal or seek a transfer. The situation is complicated by Calhanoglu's advancing age, a recent history of muscular injuries, and a long-held desire to eventually finish his career in his homeland.
Calhanoglu, 30, remains a fundamental tactical piece for Inter, with his absence often exposing a noticeable drop in the team's fluidity and control. His recent performance in a key victory over Roma, capped by a spectacular goal, underscored his continued importance. Manager Chivu has identified Piotr Zielinski as a viable alternative in the deep-lying playmaker role, a shift from predecessor Simone Inzaghi who favoured Kristjan Asllani, but the qualitative gap between the Polish midfielder and Calhanoglu is still considered evident.
The primary factors influencing the decision are physical and financial. The midfielder suffered five muscular injuries in the 2024-25 season and has already been sidelined three times in the current campaign. This dip in availability coincided with a slight decline in his exceptional performance levels from the 2023-24 season, which fueled intense transfer speculation last summer. Turkish giants Galatasaray, along with media in Turkey, are expected to renew their strong interest, applying significant pressure for a move.
Internally, the situation previously caused tension, with captain Lautaro Martinez expressing frustration after the Club World Cup and CEO Giuseppe Marotta making public comments about the player. Those issues were subsequently resolved, but the underlying dynamic remains. For now, Calhanoglu is fully focused on Inter's pursuit of a Serie A and Coppa Italia double, followed by representing Turkey at the 2026 World Cup in the United States.
The club's stance will hinge on whether Chivu and the sporting directors view Calhanoglu as an indispensable element for their future project, despite fitness concerns. If so, a contract extension will be proposed. If not, the summer of 2026 represents the last realistic opportunity to recoup a transfer fee, with Inter reportedly valuing the player at a minimum of 15 million euros. The club's tactical evolution under Chivu, who is seeking to add a more physical presence to the midfield with targets like Manu Kone or returning youth product Filip Stankovic, will also inform the final choice.
The ultimate question for Inter is whether any tactical system—be it their familiar 3-5-2, a 3-4-2-1, or even a shift to a 4-2-3-1—can truly function at its peak without Calhanoglu's unique orchestrating skills. The answer to that will define one of the most significant decisions of the Nerazzurri's upcoming transfer window.
