Inter Milan have increased their bid for Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra to €45 million, according to reports in Italy. The Nerazzurri are keen to secure the player quickly, hoping to have him join the squad before the start of pre-season training.
Atalanta, known for their shrewd negotiations, are reportedly holding firm and seeking offers starting with a ‘5’ in front, indicating a valuation exceeding €50 million. However, Inter’s latest offer is seen as a serious signal of intent, suggesting they are prepared to meet Atalanta’s demands to a significant degree. The willingness to negotiate is also aided by Palestra’s own preference to remain in Italy, specifically with Inter.
Palestra has reportedly indicated a desire to join Inter, despite interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, who were highlighted by national teammate Gianluigi Donnarumma. The 20-year-old is believed to view a move to Milan as the ideal next step in his career. Inter’s coaching staff, led by Cristian Chivu, see Palestra as a potential successor to Achraf Hakimi, the Moroccan full-back who previously played for the club and is considered a benchmark for modern full-backs.
The last player Inter paid over €40 million for was Hakimi, during the club’s previous period of significant investment under Chinese ownership. Inter’s current ownership, Oaktree, appear willing to break that precedent for Palestra, recognizing his potential. While Atalanta prefer a cash-only deal, discussions have also touched on potential player exchanges, with Inter youth player Matteo Cocchi, who shares the same agency as Palestra, emerging as a possible makeweight. Inter are aiming to finalize the deal swiftly to fend off interest from English clubs and have Palestra available for the start of the new season.
