Inter are poised to make a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, with the player deemed surplus to requirements under new manager Roberto De Zerbi. The breakdown in Romero’s relationship with the club stems from last season, compounded by a controversial decision to seek treatment for a medial collateral ligament injury in Argentina rather than remaining in London during a relegation battle.
Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2022 for a then-club record fee of €54 million and quickly established himself as a key figure, even captaining the side and helping them win the Europa League in 2025. However, a disappointing season for Tottenham, narrowly avoiding relegation to the Championship, led to a fracturing of the relationship. The decision to return to Argentina for rehabilitation, over 11,000 kilometers from London, angered both the media and supporters, significantly damaging Romero’s standing at the club.
Following a turbulent season, both the technical staff and the Tottenham board have opted for a significant overhaul of the squad. Alongside Romero, players such as Vicario, Vuskovic, Dragusin, Bissouma, Palhinha, Richarlison, and Kolo Muani are also expected to depart. Tottenham have already invested heavily in replacements, spending €108 million on Tonali and €99 million on Mateus Fernandes. Senesi arrived on a free transfer from Bournemouth, while van Hecke has been signed from Brighton for €60 million.
De Zerbi, who previously managed van Hecke in the Premier League, reportedly views the Dutch defender as one of the best in the world, capable of containing even the most prolific strikers like Erling Haaland. This acquisition effectively limits opportunities for Romero, making a transfer increasingly likely. While Tottenham are unwilling to release Romero cheaply, demanding a fee in the region of €50 million, Milan appears to be a suitable destination for all parties involved. The move would allow Romero to return to Serie A, where he previously excelled with Atalanta, and provide Inter with a high-quality defensive reinforcement.
