Inter Milan are back in the market for a right-back following Marco Palestra’s unexpected decision to join Chelsea, despite previously indicating a preference for the Nerazzurri. According to reports in Italy, the Inter leadership experienced disappointment, frustration, and anger after reaching an agreement with both Atalanta and Palestra’s representatives, only for Chelsea to intervene with a more compelling offer.
Palestra was expected to fill the void left by the departure of Denzel Dumfries, with Senegal international Moussa Diouf potentially serving as backup and Luis Henrique possibly being sold. Inter’s sporting directors, Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio, are now reassessing options to reinforce the right flank. The club had previously shown interest in Joao Cancelo during the January transfer window, but he has since moved to Barcelona and is not currently a target.
Another player previously considered is Moussa Diaby of Al-Ittihad, who continues to express a desire to return to European football after two years in Saudi Arabia. However, he is not considered the priority target. Michael Kayode, currently at Brentford, has also emerged as a potential candidate. Kayode’s profile – young, ready-made, Italian, and with considerable potential – aligns with the qualities Inter are seeking. However, Brentford’s valuation, estimated between €30-40 million, could prove a significant obstacle.
Inter are also monitoring Anan Khalaili of Union Saint-Gilloise, who has also attracted interest from Napoli. However, it is understood that Khalaili’s representatives have been more proactive in offering his services to Inter than the club actively pursuing him. Other names considered, such as Ndoye of Nottingham Forest and Dodò of Fiorentina, are not currently considered high priorities. A potential swap deal involving Weston McKennie and Inter’s Davide Frattesi has also been tentatively discussed, although the situation remains in its early stages. Inter’s management intend to take their time to identify the ideal candidate following the setback with Palestra, recognizing the importance of a reliable right-back within their preferred 3-5-2 formation.
