Romero, nicknamed “Cuti,” has a reputation as a tenacious and uncompromising defender, drawing comparisons to former Inter stalwarts like Walter Samuel, Lucio, and Marco Materazzi. Inter’s current defensive options include Alessandro Bastoni, Akanji, and Bisseck, but the club feels a need for a more aggressive and physically imposing presence at the back. The 26-year-old has prior experience in Serie A, having played for Genoa and Atalanta for three seasons before joining Tottenham in 2021. He has been a key player for Tottenham, captaining the side to Europa League victory and contributing four goals in the most recent Premier League campaign. However, his relationship with the club has reportedly deteriorated, particularly after he chose to return to Argentina for treatment on a knee injury rather than undergo surgery in England during the latter stages of last season, a decision criticized by some supporters.
Tottenham’s new manager, Roberto De Zerbi, has reportedly indicated that Romero is free to leave the club, further facilitating Inter’s pursuit. The club has also invested heavily in Jan Paul Van Hecke from Brighton, potentially pushing Romero further down the pecking order.
