Inter have completed the signing of goalkeeper Ivan Provedel from Lazio, the club confirmed on Wednesday. The 29-year-old arrives in Milan to serve as understudy to new number one, Pepo Martinez, following the departure of Yann Sommer. Provedel has signed a contract with Inter that runs until 2029.
The transfer sees Inter pay Lazio a fee of €3 million for the Italian international. The move was finalized after Provedel underwent medical examinations at the Humanitas Institute in Rozzano. Inter’s sporting director, Ausilio, was instrumental in securing the deal.
Provedel’s arrival follows consideration of other options, including Kepa Arrizabalaga, currently at Arsenal. According to reports, Kepa’s high wage demands proved a stumbling block, with the Spaniard earning approximately €3 million net per year at Arsenal—a figure he was unwilling to significantly reduce to join Inter. Furthermore, Kepa was believed to have requested a greater guarantee of playing time than Inter were prepared to offer.
Inter ultimately favored Provedel due to his more manageable salary and his willingness to accept a rotational role. The club also benefitted from Provedel’s status as an Italian national, which is advantageous for squad registration purposes and avoids utilizing a non-EU player slot. Provedel has previously played for Udinese and Empoli, before establishing himself as a key player for Lazio.
The signing of Provedel provides Inter with a reliable backup option in goal, offering competition and cover for Martinez as they look to defend their Serie A title and compete in the Champions League. His experience in the Italian top flight and familiarity with the league are expected to be valuable assets for Simone Inzaghi’s squad.
