Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has confirmed that Denzel Dumfries expressed a desire to leave the club during recent discussions, according to reports in Gazzetta Dello Sport. The comments came as Ausilio addressed potential transfer activity, including both outgoings, renewals, and possible acquisitions.
Ausilio did not disclose potential destinations for Dumfries, but acknowledged the player’s wishes were a factor in considering his future. Dumfries joined Inter from PSV Eindhoven in 2021 for a reported €15 million, quickly establishing himself as a key player on the right flank. He has made 126 appearances for the Nerazzurri across all competitions, contributing 16 goals and 12 assists.
The Netherlands international played a significant role in Inter’s Serie A title win in the 2023-24 season, featuring in 33 league matches. However, his form has been somewhat inconsistent at times, and the club may be open to a sale if a suitable offer is received. Inter are reportedly keen to strengthen their defensive options and Ausilio mentioned Solet as a potential target.
Ausilio’s comments suggest Inter are preparing for a potential overhaul of the squad during the summer transfer window. The club recently secured Champions League qualification and will be looking to build on their success. Selling Dumfries could free up funds to invest in other areas of the team, particularly in central defense. The club has been linked with several defensive targets in recent weeks, including young Italian centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno.
Inter finished the Serie A season in second place, behind champions Juventus. The club will be hoping to mount a stronger title challenge next season and will need to strengthen their squad to compete with their rivals. Dumfries’ departure would create a void on the right side of defense, but Ausilio’s comments indicate the club is already exploring potential replacements. The transfer could allow Inter to reinvest in a position they see as needing reinforcement, potentially solidifying their defense for the upcoming campaign.
