Inter Milan are prioritizing the acquisition of Atalanta’s Marco Palestra, reportedly preparing a bid of €40 million for the young full-back, according to reports in Italy. The move comes amid uncertainty surrounding the future of current Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries, who has a release clause of €25 million in his contract that expires in 2028.
Inter’s strategy centers around securing Palestra, recognizing his potential as a long-term solution at right-back. Despite the significant investment in a position already occupied by Dumfries, the club anticipates the Dutch international may exercise his release clause, particularly with interest from clubs competing in the Champions League. Palestra, who recently earned his first call-ups to the Italian national team, is viewed as a dynamic and consistent performer capable of immediately improving the squad.
The potential deal aligns with the financial objectives of Inter’s ownership group, Oaktree, which aims to lower the wage bill and reduce the average age of the team. Dumfries currently earns €4 million net per year, while Palestra earns significantly less at €280,000. Inter are prepared to offer Palestra a five-year contract worth €2 million net annually. The club would aim to realize a substantial profit from a potential Dumfries sale, with the transfer largely representing a capital gain.
However, convincing Atalanta to part with Palestra will be a challenge. The Bergamo club is not under financial pressure to sell and has so far resisted Inter’s advances. Inter are also considering options for other players, including potentially selling Luis Henrique, who has attracted interest from clubs in England and Spain, and Davide Frattesi, who may return to Roma or move to the Premier League, possibly Nottingham Forest. The club is also exploring a move for Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, a midfielder who could strengthen the midfield, with initial discussions having taken place between Inter’s sporting director Ausilio and his Liverpool counterpart Richard Hughes.
