Inter Milan are monitoring the performances of Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence at the ongoing World Cup, with the player’s displays potentially increasing his value and attracting wider interest. Spence’s standout performance in England’s semi-final match, considered by some to be the best of his career, has caught the eye of Inter manager Cristian Chivu, who is seeking a replacement for Denzel Dumfries on the right flank following his recent transfer.
However, Spence’s elevated profile on the international stage could complicate Inter’s pursuit, potentially leading to competition from other clubs and prompting Tottenham to seek a higher transfer fee. The 23-year-old has been a surprise standout for England under manager Tuchel, benefiting from an injury to Tino Livramento prior to the tournament. Tuchel notably selected Spence over Alexander-Arnold for the squad, and Spence has started in three of England’s seven matches, demonstrating his versatility by playing on both the left and right sides.
Inter view Spence as a potential immediate starter, filling the void left by Dumfries and providing cover for Federico Dimarco. While naturally a left-back, Spence has frequently featured on the right side, both as a traditional full-back and as a wing-back in a five-man midfield. A loan spell at Genoa in January 2024 did not yield significant playing time, with only eight starts and eight substitute appearances under Alberto Gilardino, where he was primarily deployed as a right winger.
Spence offers a different profile to Dumfries, being less explosive in attack but possessing good dynamism and a willingness to press opponents. He is described as more of a wing-back than a traditional full-back, and demonstrates good link-up play with attacking players. Concerns remain regarding his consistency and defensive awareness, issues that have hampered his career to date. However, Tottenham already have a settled first-choice right-back in Pedro Porro, and Inter could offer Spence a starting role, potentially benefitting all parties involved.
