Andoni Iraola is poised to become the next manager of Crystal Palace, according to reports from El Chiringuito, seemingly ending interest from both Manchester United and Chelsea. The AFC Bournemouth manager announced his departure from the Cherries last month, immediately making him one of the most sought-after coaches in European football.
Initial speculation linked Iraola with Athletic Club, following the decision of Ernesto Valverde to leave his post. However, the Basque club quickly moved to appoint former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic, removing Iraola from contention for that role. This opened the door for Premier League clubs to pursue the Spaniard.
Chelsea, currently ninth in the league and facing the prospect of missing out on European competition, had expressed strong interest in Iraola. The Blues have been unstable this season, having already moved through three managers, most recently dismissing Liam Rosenior last month after the earlier sacking of Enzo Maresca, with Calum McFarlane currently in charge on an interim basis. Iraola, however, is reportedly unconvinced by the project at Stamford Bridge, seeking greater stability.
Manchester United also identified Iraola as a potential candidate, despite the successful interim spell of Michael Carrick, who secured Champions League qualification for the club. While Carrick has impressed in his temporary role, United are still exploring options for a permanent appointment, with Iraola featuring prominently on their shortlist. Ultimately, Crystal Palace appears to have presented a project that more closely aligns with Iraola’s ambitions.
Iraola’s move to Crystal Palace represents a significant coup for the London club, offering a fresh start under a highly-rated manager. His tactical approach and proven ability to develop players could be instrumental in elevating Palace’s performance in the coming seasons. This appointment closes a chapter in the managerial search for both United and Chelsea, who will now need to reassess their options.
