Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is reportedly prioritizing a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton over Bournemouth’s Alex Scott as he seeks to reshape the Reds’ midfield this summer. This comes as Fabrizio Romano has indicated Liverpool would consider offers of around £55 million for Alexis Mac Allister.
Iraola took the helm at Anfield following a disappointing season for Liverpool, which saw them finish fifth despite significant investment in new players. The new manager is expected to implement a more energetic and pressing style of play, necessitating changes in the squad’s composition. While Scott has been linked with a return to Liverpool after previously being scouted, journalist David Lynch suggests Wharton is a more likely target. “Adam Wharton was ahead of him as a player Liverpool were likely to sign,” Lynch told Anfield Index.
Wharton, valued at approximately £80 million by Crystal Palace, has emerged as a key player for the Eagles since joining from Blackburn Rovers. His ability to dictate play and contribute defensively would address a need for greater physicality in Liverpool’s midfield. Mac Allister, a World Cup winner with Argentina, experienced a dip in form last season, leading to speculation about his future.
Romano reports that Liverpool are open to considering offers in the region of £55 million for Mac Allister, should a suitable proposal emerge. While the club is not actively seeking to sell the player, they will not stand in his way if a beneficial offer is received. This potential sale, alongside potential additions like Wharton, signals a significant overhaul of Liverpool’s midfield as Iraola prepares for his first full season in charge. The changes could allow Liverpool to regain a foothold amongst the Premier League’s elite.
