Bayer Leverkusen are in direct negotiations with AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, according to Sky Germany. The development marks a shift in the Bundesliga club’s managerial search, previously linked heavily with former Eintracht Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner.
Leverkusen are reportedly seeking a swift resolution to their managerial vacancy, though Iraola is also considering offers from other European clubs. The Rhineland club had identified Iraola as one of two primary candidates, alongside Glasner, following Xabi Alonso’s departure to Liverpool.
Iraola arrived at Bournemouth in the summer of 2023, guiding the club to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League during his first season. Prior to joining Bournemouth, the Spaniard managed Rayo Vallecano for four seasons, establishing a reputation for a high-pressing, attacking style of play. He previously coached in Spain’s second and third tiers, as well as a brief spell with New York City FC in Major League Soccer.
The timing of Leverkusen’s approach comes after a historic season for the club, culminating in their first-ever Bundesliga title under Alonso. Maintaining momentum and building on that success will be a key priority for the new manager. The club confirmed that Flamengo coach Filipe Luis is no longer under consideration for the position, effectively narrowing the field to Iraola and Glasner, though Iraola now appears to be the frontrunner.
Should Iraola accept the offer, it would represent a significant step up in his managerial career, placing him in charge of a Champions League-competing team. Leverkusen’s proactive pursuit suggests they believe Iraola’s tactical approach aligns with their ambitions for continued success in both domestic and European competitions.
