Andoni Iraola is poised to become the new manager of Liverpool, with the club quickly moving to finalize his appointment following the dismissal of Arne Slot. The news comes after a swift review of the season which saw Liverpool finish fifth and without silverware.
According to sources at Sky Sports, FSG felt compelled to make a change despite Slot’s recent Premier League title win, citing concerns over the team’s performance and direction. The club’s owners are keen to act decisively, and Iraola, formerly of Bournemouth, has emerged as the clear frontrunner.
The 43-year-old Iraola impressed during his time at Bournemouth, guiding the Cherries to European competition for the first time in their history. His reputation for high-intensity football has been highlighted as a key factor in Liverpool’s interest, with many viewing him as a stylistic fit for the club. Iraola’s coaching philosophy was developed under Marcelo Bielsa at Athletic Bilbao, drawing comparisons to the approach of former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
However, journalist James Pearce has cautioned that Iraola’s appointment represents a gamble, noting the significant difference in pressure and expectation between managing Bournemouth and Liverpool. Pearce also pointed to Iraola’s lack of experience in the Champions League as a potential concern. Despite these reservations, Pearce acknowledges the appeal of Iraola’s tactical approach, particularly his emphasis on intensity, something Liverpool lacked under Slot.
Pearce believes a substantial squad rebuild is necessary, suggesting Liverpool require at least five new signings. He specifically highlighted the need to replace Mohamed Salah on the right wing, add pace and dynamism in wide areas, and strengthen midfield options. Concerns were also raised about the depth in central defence and the need for a reliable right-back following a season-ending injury to Conor Bradley. The appointment of Richard Hughes as sporting director, who previously worked with Iraola at Bournemouth, is believed to have influenced the decision.
Fabrizio Romano reports that all other managerial candidates are now off the table as Liverpool accelerate their pursuit of Iraola. Stan Collymore has also expressed his approval of the impending appointment, indicating a positive reception from within the club’s fanbase.
