Torino's Ismajli Set for Return as D'Aversa Mulls Midfield Options
Torino manager Roberto D'Aversa is expected to reinstate defender Ardian Ismajli to his starting lineup for the upcoming Serie A fixture against Inter Milan, according to reports from Italy. The Albanian centre-back missed the previous match against Cremonese through suspension but had been an ever-present in the six games prior, forming a key part of the defensive structure D'Aversa has sought to solidify since his appointment.
In midfield, the pairing of Cesare Casadei and Giedrius Gineitis remains the favoured option, but D'Aversa highlighted the growing contention for places. He specifically noted the improving condition of Turkish international Emirhan Ilkhan, suggesting the player is now approaching the physical consistency required to challenge for a starting role. "Now he is rediscovering that continuity which can allow him to start," D'Aversa said in his pre-match press conference.
The manager also pointed to the versatility of Valentino Lazaro as a factor complicating his selection decisions, hinting the Austrian could feature due to minor fitness issues affecting other squad members. However, D'Aversa expressed significant disappointment over a fresh injury setback for attacking midfielder Tino Anjorin, who was building his fitness after a career hampered by physical problems. "It's a shame," D'Aversa said. "He was growing on a physical level. He is a very strong player." Anjorin, on loan from Chelsea, sustained the injury in a training ground incident.
D'Aversa's tenure, spanning seven matches so far, has been characterized by a preference for consistency over experimentation, aiming to build what he described as "certainties" within the squad. This approach suggests minimal tactical surprises against Inter, with a focus on the defensive solidity provided by Ismajli's return. The 27-year-old defender, who joined Torino from Empoli in 2022, has become a mainstay when available, and his presence is considered crucial against one of the league's most potent attacks.
The emerging depth in midfield, with Ilkhan pushing Casadei and Gineitis, represents a positive development for a Torino side looking to cement a top-half finish. The injury to Anjorin, however, deprives the Granata of a creative option as they seek to improve an attack that has struggled for goals this season. The club currently sits mid-table, with European qualification appearing increasingly unlikely, making the remaining fixtures an opportunity to build foundations for the next campaign under D'Aversa's clear tactical vision.
