He acknowledged a sense of urgency, but also cautioned against rushing the process.
The pursuit was discussed following a meeting between Maldini, advisor Leonardo, and Italian Football Federation president Giovanni Malagò with Serie A club representatives in Milan. The meeting, primarily focused on technical and commercial matters – including a partnership renewal with Philadelphia – did not directly address the Guardiola negotiations. No club representatives inquired about the status of the pursuit or potential alternatives, as Maldini, Leonardo, and Malagò presented their broader vision for the national team’s future. Participants Beppe Marotta and Luca Percassi reportedly offered their support.
Financial considerations are not the primary obstacle, according to Maldini, dismissing reports of a 20 million euro demand. The main challenge lies in Guardiola’s current intentions, as he is considering a period of rest from management. Both Maldini and Guardiola are expected to attend Gianluigi Donnarumma’s wedding in Puglia, potentially providing an opportunity to further discussions. Maldini revealed that Carlo Ancelotti was also considered, though a move for the current Brazil manager was complicated by past issues during their time at Paris Saint-Germain.
Should Guardiola prove unattainable, Andrea Pirlo has emerged as the leading alternative. Leonardo emphasized the desire for a manager who aligns philosophically with the new technical direction, suggesting that managers like Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini may not be suitable due to their established approaches. Pirlo, with the backing of Maldini and Leonardo, is seen as a more adaptable candidate. Pirlo would benefit from the mentorship of Maldini and Leonardo, should he be appointed.
