Jacob Rasmussen starts for Kaiserslautern after summer transfer
Jacob Rasmussen has been named in the starting lineup for 1. FC Kaiserslautern for their 2. Bundesliga match against Fortuna Düsseldorf, marking his first appearance since completing a permanent transfer to the club. The Danish defender, who joined Kaiserslautern from Italian side Fiorentina this summer, replaces the on-loan Kim Ji-soo in a three-man central defence. While the exact financial details of the move were not disclosed by either club, it is understood to be a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee, with Rasmussen signing a multi-year contract.
Rasmussen's inclusion by coach Torsten Lieberknecht comes as Kaiserslautern seeks to solidify a defence that has conceded 12 goals in their first five league matches of the season. The 27-year-old brings significant experience from his time in Serie A and the Danish Superliga, having also had spells with Empoli and a previous loan at Austrian side TSV Hartberg. His physical presence and aerial ability are viewed as key assets for a Kaiserslautern side that has struggled with consistency at the back.
The move concludes a lengthy search for a permanent central defensive solution for the Red Devils, who have utilised several loan players in the position in recent seasons. According to German outlet Kicker, Kaiserslautern had been tracking Rasmussen for several months before finally agreeing terms with Fiorentina in the final days of the transfer window. For the player, the transfer offers a clear path to regular first-team football, which had become limited in Florence.
For Fiorentina, the sale represents the offloading of a squad player who was not in manager Vincenzo Italiano's plans, allowing them to recoup a portion of the fee they paid to Esbjerg fB for him in 2019. Rasmussen's career had stalled somewhat in Italy, making only 13 senior appearances for La Viola across four years, with multiple loan moves punctuating his tenure.
Rasmussen's immediate task will be to help Kaiserslautern climb away from the lower reaches of the 2. Bundesliga table, with the team currently hovering just above the relegation playoff spot. His performance alongside fellow centre-backs Lars Bünning and Dominik Schad will be scrutinised as Lieberknecht looks for a more resilient defensive structure. A strong showing in Germany could also rejuvenate Rasmussen's prospects with the Danish national team, for which he has one senior cap earned in 2020.
