Bologna defender Joao Mario faces a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a left rectus femoris strain, according to the Serie A club. The injury was confirmed following instrumental tests after the player returned to training at Casteldebole. The former Juventus defender will now undergo a period of individualized training, with his recovery timeline to be assessed in the coming days.
The news comes as a blow to coach Vincenzo Italiano's pre-season preparations, with the squad having just resumed work following a short break. Joao Mario, who joined Bologna last summer, had been expected to be a key part of the defensive unit ahead of the new campaign. His absence will require adjustments during a crucial phase of team building.
There was more positive news from the medical department, however, as defenders Nicolò Casale and Federico Bernardeschi returned to full group training. Bernardeschi had been sidelined with a right iliac muscle lesion. The returns of both experienced players will provide a timely boost to the squad's depth and options in defence.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski and forward Thijs Dallinga continued their personalized training programs, working separately from the main group. The club's statement provided no specific return dates for any of the players undergoing rehabilitation, indicating assessments are ongoing.
Joao Mario's injury presents an early challenge for Italiano, who is entering his first season in charge at Bologna. The club finished fifth last term and will compete in the Champions League, meaning squad management and depth will be tested more than ever. The 26-year-old Portuguese defender made 24 league appearances in his debut season, contributing to a defence that conceded the fourth-fewest goals in Serie A.
The timing of the setback is particularly unfortunate, occurring during the foundational period of pre-season where tactical concepts and physical conditioning are implemented. Bologna will hope the issue is minor and that Joao Mario can rejoin full training soon to compete for a starting role. The club's transfer activity this summer may now also be influenced by the need for defensive cover during this period.
