John Textor temporarily suspended from Botafogo management by arbitration court
John Textor has been temporarily suspended from his management role at Brazilian club Botafogo by a national arbitration court, the club confirmed on Friday. The decision, described by Botafogo as a preliminary ruling, stems from a financial conflict and a request for judicial reorganization filed by the club itself. Botafogo stated it is taking all useful measures to have the decision re-examined, with a review scheduled for April 29.
According to Brazilian media reports, the suspension relates to a request from Botafogo to temporarily suspend the voting rights of Textor's Eagle Bidco, the club's majority shareholder. The club's filing reportedly accused the holding company of obstructing the entry of new capital into the institution. The arbitration court's decision, parts of which were widely circulated, suggested Textor's actions risked causing irreparable harm to shareholders and the club's supporters.
This development represents another significant legal and financial setback for the American businessman. It follows a recent ruling by a court in Rio de Janeiro state ordering Textor's former club, Olympique Lyonnais, to pay Botafogo the equivalent of 21 million euros. Textor addressed the suspension on Instagram, writing, "I am at peace [...] I know our shared project will continue."
The situation highlights the ongoing financial pressures at Botafogo, the 2024 Copa Libertadores champions, despite their on-field success. The call for judicial reorganization is a legal mechanism in Brazil akin to bankruptcy protection, indicating severe liquidity issues. The move to suspend Textor's management rights suggests a deepening rift between the club's administration and its principal owner over the path to financial stability.
For Textor, whose multi-club network includes Lyon, Botafogo, and other stakes, the suspension challenges his operational control at a key asset. The outcome of the April 29 review will be closely watched to see if this is a temporary procedural step or the prelude to a more permanent separation. The ongoing litigation with Lyon also adds a layer of financial complexity to Textor's and Botafogo's circumstances, with a substantial sum owed to the Brazilian club still pending.
