Real Sociedad defender Jon Martin has publicly dismissed speculation linking him with moves to Barcelona or Real Madrid, insisting his focus remains on the Basque club. The 20-year-old centre-back, whose current contract runs until 2031 and contains a €50 million release clause, addressed the persistent rumours in an interview with Diario AS. Both Spanish giants have been credited with an interest in the Spain under-21 international in recent months, with Barcelona's director of football Deco reportedly holding talks with the player's agent.
Martin was unequivocal about his intentions, stating his desire to stay at the club that developed him. "I'm clear about it. I want to be here as long as possible, I want to be here, at home, because this is the place that has given me everything," he said. "I'm at peace and I hope to be here for many years and win many titles like the Cup." Real Sociedad secured the Copa del Rey last month, with Martin playing a significant role in their campaign.
The young defender acknowledged the widespread nature of the transfer talk but claimed it has not distracted him. "It's impossible not to hear about it because everyone's talking about it," Martin explained. "You're away from it, and whether you like it or not, you see it; even my friends tell me because they're out there all day looking at things. It inevitably reaches you, but like I said, I'm still focused on working with Real Sociedad." He added that he remains unaware of any concrete developments and is not worried by the situation.
Martin has established himself as a crucial player for Imanol Alguacil's side this season, making 28 appearances and starting 27 of them. His commanding performances at the heart of La Real's defence have marked him out as one of the most promising defensive talents in La Liga. His rapid ascent and new long-term deal, signed in October, have naturally attracted the attention of clubs with greater financial power, but his current release clause represents a substantial figure.
For Barcelona, Martin represents a potential long-term defensive solution amid an ongoing need to refresh their backline, while Real Madrid are perennially monitoring top domestic talent. However, Martin's firm stance provides Real Sociedad with significant stability as they plan for the future. His commitment is a major boost for the club's sporting project as they look to build on their cup success and consistently challenge for European qualification. The player's immediate future appears settled, though the presence of a fixed fee means speculation is likely to resurface in future transfer windows.
