José Bordalas has agreed to a new two-year contract with Getafe, extending his stay at the club until 2028, the club confirmed. The news comes after a period of speculation linking the 62-year-old manager with a move to the Premier League’s Crystal Palace, a position ultimately filled by Pierre Sage. Bordalas initially managed Getafe between 2016 and 2021 before returning in 2023.
Bordalas’s continued leadership will see Getafe compete in the Europa Conference League next season, having secured a surprising seventh-place finish in the recent La Liga campaign. His first spell at the club established him as a respected, if sometimes controversial, figure in Spanish football. He is known for a pragmatic, defensively-focused approach to the game.
During the 2023-24 season, Getafe’s matches were characterized by a relatively low amount of actual playing time, a tactical approach frequently attributed to Bordalas’s management style. The team scored only 32 goals in 38 league matches, reflecting a focus on solidity and efficiency rather than attacking flair. Despite this, Getafe’s results have consistently defied expectations under his guidance.
Prior to his return, Bordalas had built a reputation for maximizing resources and achieving success with limited budgets. His methods have often been the subject of debate, with some critics questioning the aesthetic appeal of his teams, but his effectiveness is undeniable. The new contract signifies the club’s faith in his ability to continue delivering positive results and navigating European competition. This commitment from both sides provides stability as Getafe prepares for a challenging season ahead, balancing domestic league duties with continental commitments.
