Jose Mourinho linked with Real Madrid return as Benfica future uncertain
Benfica manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly awaiting contact from Real Madrid over a potential return to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer. According to reports in Spain, the Portuguese coach remains a candidate to replace current Madrid boss Alvaro Arbeloa, with a symbolic release clause in his contract allowing for a free transfer until late May. Mourinho has one year remaining on his deal with the Portuguese club.
Diario AS notes that Mourinho, when asked about his future at Benfica by RTP, responded by asking the journalist if they could guarantee their own position next season. Despite this, the 63-year-old is said to be planning for next season with Benfica, having told his squad he aims to win the Primeira Liga. The club currently sits third behind Porto and Sporting CP with a few games remaining in the season. Club president Rui Costa is reportedly waiting to see how the next campaign progresses before discussing a new contract.
The specific clause in Mourinho's contract that permits a free move to Real Madrid expires ten days after Benfica's final match of the season, which is likely to be on May 26th. Even after that date passes, any compensation owed to Benfica would be minimal. AS states that Mourinho is keen on a return to Madrid and would likely accept an offer if the Spanish giants made one.
Much of the speculation is understood to be emanating from Mourinho's camp. His reputation was impacted by his handling of an incident involving Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni, who was alleged to have racially abused Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior during a Champions League play-off match. That episode, along with his historically intense managerial style, could pose a concern for a Madrid dressing room reportedly unimpressed with his past behaviour.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has long held an affection for Mourinho, who managed the club from 2010 to 2013, winning a La Liga title and a Copa del Rey. However, with the club under significant pressure to appoint the right successor for Arbeloa, turning to Mourinho would represent a considerable risk. The decision comes at a pivotal time for Madrid as they look to build on a period of sustained domestic and European success.
