Jugovic backs McKennie as key man ahead of Juventus clash with Milan
Former Juventus midfielder Vladimir Jugovic has identified Weston McKennie as the potential match-winner for the Bianconeri in their crucial Serie A clash against AC Milan at San Siro. Speaking ahead of the fixture, the 1996 Champions League final hero drew parallels between the current American international and his own historic performance in a famous 6-1 Juventus victory at the same venue 29 years ago.
Jugovic, who scored twice and assisted Christian Vieri in that 1997 rout, told Italian media that McKennie possesses a similar instinct in front of goal. "McKennie. He is a different midfielder from how I was, but he has a similar nose for goal," Jugovic said. "I hope he imitates me, even just one goal this time would be enough." With Juventus fighting to secure Champions League qualification, Jugovic emphasized the importance of a positive result, stating that finishing third or fourth is not the same.
The Serbian legend also offered a broader assessment of the current Juventus project under manager Luciano Spalletti, whose contract was recently renewed. "Spalletti is a top manager and I hope he brings the club back to where it deserves," Jugovic stated. He pointed to the team's improvement with largely the same squad as evidence of the coach's impact. On the subject of reinforcements, Jugovic agreed with former coach Fabio Capello that the club needs significant signings to challenge for the title, specifically endorsing a move for Manchester City's Bernardo Silva, who is available on a free transfer.
Jugovic's comments come amid ongoing speculation over the future of striker Dusan Vlahovic, whose contract is expiring. When asked if he could imagine the Serbian forward at Milan next season, Jugovic suggested Juventus should build around the 26-year-old. "If I were at Juventus, in attack I would focus more on him than on Lewandowski, who is very strong but is going on 38," he said. He also advocated for a second chance for forward Moise Kean, who has recently found form.
Regarding the threat posed by Milan, Jugovic singled out Rafael Leao, acknowledging the Portuguese winger's undeniable quality despite inconsistent performances. The match also sees Massimiliano Allegri, now managing Milan, face many of his former Juventus players. Jugovic noted that Allegri's intimate knowledge of those individuals could be an advantage for the Rossoneri. As Juventus prepares for the pivotal encounter, the endorsement from a club legend like Jugovic underscores the growing expectation on McKennie and his teammates to deliver a performance that can solidify their top-four ambitions.
