Jules Koundé Eyes Barcelona Appearance Record After Milestone Match
Jules Koundé has equalled Ousmane Dembélé as the second-most capped French player in FC Barcelona's history, marking his 185th appearance for the club in Wednesday's La Liga victory over Celta Vigo. The 27-year-old defender, who joined Barcelona from Sevilla in the summer of 2022, now has his sights set on surpassing the record held by another French legend, Éric Abidal, who made 193 appearances for the Catalan giants. The club's official French-language social media channel highlighted the milestone, noting Koundé's ascent in the club's historical rankings.
Koundé is under contract at the Camp Nou until 2030, providing a clear pathway for him to chase down Abidal's mark. With eight more appearances needed to break the record, the defender has openly acknowledged his ambition. "It would be a great pride to surpass Abidal," Koundé stated, according to the club's communication. "I'm not going to lie to you: it's an objective. It's a pleasure to be able to play an important role in this club. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to reach that number."
The French international's consistent presence has been a cornerstone of Barcelona's defence since his arrival, with his versatility allowing him to feature both as a centre-back and a right-back. His journey to 185 caps has been rapid, underscoring his importance to manager Xavi Hernández's plans over the past four seasons. This milestone comes amidst a campaign where Barcelona is closing in on the La Liga title, though the match against Celta was marred by a season-ending injury to young star Lamine Yamal.
Koundé's pursuit of the record is symbolic of a modern Barcelona era built on defensive stability, with the Frenchman forming a reliable partnership with the likes of Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen. His potential to become the most capped Frenchman in the club's history would solidify his status as a key figure in the post-Lionel Messi transition. As the season enters its final stretch, Koundé's fitness and form will be crucial not only for the title challenge but also for his personal quest to etch his name into the club's record books ahead of a legend like Abidal.
