Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez has moved to quash speculation over his future, insisting his sole focus is on the club's upcoming Champions League semi-final against Arsenal. The Argentine forward addressed the media ahead of Wednesday's first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium, where he downplayed persistent rumours linking him with a move away from the Spanish capital.
Alvarez, who joined Atletico from Manchester City in a permanent deal two years ago, was unequivocal when asked about the constant swirl of transfer gossip. "Every week new rumours come out, I don't pay attention to what is said on social media, it's often an avalanche of lies," Alvarez said, according to reports from the media day. "I don't waste energy on this. It is the most important period of the season and I want to be in shape to help the team and do great things."
The 24-year-old's comments come at a pivotal moment for Diego Simeone's side, who are preparing for their first Champions League semi-final in a decade. Alvarez referenced the club's last final appearance in 2014 as a source of inspiration. "We have a very clear objective and we want to make history too," he said. "We know what we can achieve and what we are capable of. We are focused, we want to play a great game."
On the pitch, Alvarez emphasised the need for a strong performance across both legs against Mikel Arteta's Premier League leaders, drawing parallels with their quarter-final victory over Barcelona. He noted that starting at home, as they did in that 4-0 first-leg win, was not a decisive factor. The World Cup winner pointed to their 3-3 draw away to Club Brugge in the group stage, which was followed by a commanding home victory, as proof that two complete performances are required.
The forward also acknowledged the need for a response following the painful penalty shootout defeat to Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final earlier this month. "It was a hard blow for us," Alvarez admitted. "Now we have to recover, overcome that memory and give our all against the Gunners." His determination to channel that disappointment into European success underscores his commitment to the club's immediate ambitions.
Alvarez's future has been a regular topic of discussion since his arrival from Manchester City, where he won multiple trophies before seeking more consistent playing time in La Liga. His current stance suggests any potential movement, should it materialise, will be addressed only after the season concludes. For now, his priority is clear: helping Atletico Madrid navigate a path to the final at Wembley on June 1.
