Juventus Agree Deal to Sign Atalanta Midfielder Seko Fofana
Juventus have reached an agreement to sign midfielder Seko Fofana from Serie A rivals Atalanta, according to sources close to the negotiations. The deal, which is understood to be a permanent transfer, is expected to be finalized in the coming days, with the player set to sign a multi-year contract in Turin.
The move comes as Juventus seeks to reinforce its midfield options following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Atalanta in Bergamo, a result that propelled the Bianconeri into fourth place. The club's management, led by Cristiano Giuntoli, has identified the need for greater physicality and dynamism in the center of the park as a key objective for the summer window. Fofana, 29, fits that profile and represents a player with extensive experience in Italy's top flight.
Fofana joined Atalanta from Lens in the summer of 2023 for a fee reported to be around €25 million. His first season in Bergamo has been one of adaptation, with the Ivorian international making 24 league appearances, often as a rotational option in Gian Piero Gasperini's demanding system. Prior to his move to Italy, Fofana was a talismanic figure for Lens in Ligue 1, where his powerful, box-to-box style made him one of the league's most dominant midfielders and helped the club secure a surprise second-place finish in 2022/23.
For Juventus, the acquisition addresses a clear need. The midfield has at times lacked the robust presence Fofana can provide, and his arrival will offer manager Massimiliano Allegri a different tactical profile alongside technicians like Manuel Locatelli and Adrien Rabiot. The financial details of the transfer have not been disclosed, but it is believed Juventus have negotiated a fee significantly lower than what Atalanta paid last year, capitalizing on the player's desire for a new challenge and a potentially larger role.
From Atalanta's perspective, the sale represents a pragmatic piece of business. With Gasperini's squad set for another summer of evolution and the club actively pursuing other targets, the funds from Fofana's departure will be reinvested. His exit also follows the arrival of former Juventus winger Jeremie Boga, whose decisive goal in the recent fixture between the two clubs underscored the ongoing transfer activity linking Turin and Bergamo.
The transfer signifies Juventus's intent to build a more physically imposing squad capable of grinding out results, a trait displayed in their recent win at the Gewiss Stadium. Fofana's energy and ball-carrying ability should provide a direct boost to their transitional play. For the player, it is a chance to re-establish himself as a central figure at one of Italy's most prestigious clubs.
