Juventus Manager Spalletti Reflects on Crucial Atalanta Win, Champions League Chase
Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti has praised his team's resilience after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Atalanta, a result that bolsters their bid for a top-four finish and a return to the UEFA Champions League. The win, secured by a first-half goal from Ivorian forward Jérémie Boga, temporarily lifts Juventus into fourth place in the Serie A standings, applying pressure on their rivals for the final Champions League qualification spot.
Speaking to the press after the match, Spalletti acknowledged a difficult start to the game. According to his post-match comments to Sky Sport, the team struggled in the opening half-hour against a high-pressing Atalanta side. "We started the first half an hour suffering because they are a good side," Spalletti said. "We were always a step behind, not good in our set-up, in creating triangles, in playing one-twos. When teams press you like that, you suffer."
Spalletti noted a significant improvement after the interval, crediting his players for turning the game around. He highlighted the importance of the result, given the team's recent frustrations. "It has happened to us many times to have the advantage from a play perspective and not bring home the win. This time it was reversed," he explained to Sky. The manager also revealed that several players, including Kenan Yildiz and Tiago Djaló, were not at full fitness, having played through minor issues to help the team.
Reflecting on a recent 3-0 Coppa Italia defeat to the same opponents, Spalletti admitted his side paid a heavy price for their mistakes in that cup tie. He contrasted that performance with the league victory, crediting his team for learning from their errors. "In the second half, we played a different game," he told DAZN. "We knew it would be tough, and they are a very strong team that is in great form on the pitch. They push you from side to side. It was a different game after the first half hour."
Looking ahead to the final stretch of the season, Spalletti emphasized the club's expectation to be in the Champions League. "It’s a level of glory," he stated, referring to Europe's elite competition. He stressed the importance of Juventus being a fixture in the tournament, suggesting it is the club's natural environment. With a tight race for the top four, Spalletti acknowledged the challenge ahead but remained focused on his own team's performance. "We have a demanding schedule, but we must think about our own game," he said in his press conference.
The manager also took a moment to acknowledge the club's ownership, specifically mentioning chairman John Elkann. "I would have liked to see Elkann in the dressing room," Spalletti said, praising the club's organization and ambition. With a crucial run-in ahead, this gritty win provides Juventus with a significant psychological and tactical platform for their final push for a top-four finish.
