Juventus Monitor Yildiz Knee Injury Ahead of Crucial Run-In
Juventus are managing a knee injury to key attacker Kenan Yildiz as they enter the final six games of the Serie A season holding fourth place. The 19-year-old Turkish international was substituted in the 58th minute of last weekend's vital 2-1 win at Atalanta and has since been training separately from the main squad.
Manager Luciano Spalletti confirmed after the match that Yildiz had been playing through discomfort, describing a situation where the player "clenched his teeth" to participate in a critical fixture for Juventus's Champions League qualification hopes. Club medical staff are now adopting a cautious approach, monitoring the inflammation in his left knee on a daily basis to avoid aggravating the issue ahead of Sunday's match against Bologna.
The problem is not new, with reports indicating Yildiz has been managing the inflammation for some time. He felt discomfort during the pre-match warm-up against Atalanta, briefly interrupting his preparations, yet still started the game. His performance was reportedly limited by the issue, a concern for a player who has been a breakout star this season with seven league goals.
Juventus's grip on fourth place was strengthened by the Atalanta victory combined with results elsewhere, but maintaining it will require navigating these fitness concerns. Yildiz's creativity and goal threat from the wing or as a second striker have been integral to the team's attack, especially during periods of inconsistency for more senior forwards.
In his absence from full training, the focus at the club's Continassa training centre turned to lighter moments. A squad-wide language game, where players were asked to say anything but "good morning," provided amusement. Winger Armand Zhegrova, in particular, entertained teammates by declaring his good Italian and asking, "Are you drinking enough?"
Zhegrova was also noted as a standout performer in a small-sided training match, scoring a low left-footed goal, alongside marks from Fabio Miretti, Teun Koopmeiners, and Arkadiusz Milik. The form of these squad players could become increasingly important if Yildiz's minutes need to be managed carefully during the tense season finale.
The coming days will be crucial in determining Yildiz's availability for the Bologna fixture. Juventus's final run-in includes matches against direct rivals for European places, making the fitness of one of their most dynamic young talents a significant subplot in the race for the top four.
