Juventus intends to retain ownership of young goalkeeper Giovanni Daffara following his successful season on loan at Serie B side Avellino, according to reports from Italy. The 20-year-old, whose contract with Juventus runs until June 2028, is currently on a temporary deal with the Irpini, but the parent club holds a decisive counter-option as part of the agreement. This clause ensures Juventus can reclaim the player should Avellino trigger their own option to buy, a move the Bianconeri are determined to preempt.
Daffara has been a standout performer for Avellino this season, playing a key role in their push for the Serie B playoffs. His campaign peaked with a man-of-the-match display against Empoli, where he saved two penalties in the same sequence of play. Initially starting the season as a backup to the more experienced Iannarilli, Daffara seized his opportunity in late October and established himself as first-choice until April, demonstrating the same resilience that saw him rise from backup to starter in Juventus's youth setup.
His form was rewarded in March with a first call-up to the Italy Under-21 national team under coach Silvio Baldini for European Championship qualifiers. Juventus officials have reportedly been monitoring his progress closely and are pleased with his development. The club's plan, as outlined by sources close to the situation, is to extend his contract on improved terms that reflect his rising status before sending him out on another loan next season.
The envisioned next step is a loan to a Serie A club, a move designed to test Daffara at the highest domestic level before Juventus makes a final decision on his long-term future at the club. While there has been reported interest from abroad for a permanent transfer, Juventus's current stance is to keep the player within their orbit. The club's strategy underscores a broader focus on developing and integrating youth talent, with Daffara now positioned as a potential future asset for the first-team goalkeeping department.
