Juventus are actively pursuing Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, but a deal hinges on the player accepting a reduced salary, according to reports from Italy. Contacts have been established with Martinez’s representatives following a setback in their pursuit of Liverpool’s Alisson Becker, who the Merseyside club appear unwilling to release.
Martinez, nicknamed “Dibu,” has reportedly indicated he is open to a move to Turin after a successful spell at Aston Villa, which culminated in winning the Europa League. The 34-year-old Argentine international was also a key figure in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph, making crucial saves during the penalty shootout against France. He currently earns €7 million per year at Villa, a figure Juventus deem outside their current wage structure.
The Bianconeri have reportedly capped wages at €6 million plus bonuses, the same amount earned by Kenan Yildiz. Discussions are underway to determine if Martinez is willing to accept a lower salary to facilitate the transfer. Last year, Aston Villa were reportedly braced for Martinez’s departure, with the player even appearing to bid farewell to fans after a match against Tottenham.
As an alternative, Juventus are also considering Guglielmo Vicario, the 30-year-old Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper and current Italy international. Vicario’s salary, between €3 and €4 million per year, falls within Juventus’s budgetary constraints, and his contract with Tottenham expires in 2028, potentially making him a more affordable option. A move for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan has also been tentatively mentioned, but his higher wage demands and Milan’s valuation present significant obstacles. Juventus are prioritizing securing an experienced and commanding presence in goal following perceived inconsistencies from Michele Di Gregorio.
