Juventus are prioritizing Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as they search for a replacement for the departed Michele Di Gregorio, according to former Juventus goalkeeper Stefano Tacconi. Tacconi, who made 377 appearances for the Turin club between 1983 and 1992, believes Vicario’s experience and temperament make him an ideal fit for the Bianconeri.
Juventus have reportedly considered a number of goalkeepers following their pursuit of Di Gregorio, including Alisson Becker of Liverpool, Maignan, Svilar, Ederson, and others. However, the club has now narrowed its focus to Vicario and Parma’s Zion Suzuki, with Aston Villa’s Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez proving a more difficult acquisition. Tacconi firmly advocates for Vicario, citing his traditional preference for Italian goalkeepers and the player’s solid Premier League experience.
Vicario, currently the understudy to Gianluigi Donnarumma for the Italian national team, has spent the last three seasons with Tottenham, winning the Europa League despite the team’s overall struggles. Tacconi highlighted Vicario’s reliability and noted his relative lack of media attention, suggesting the player could benefit from being more vocal. He also drew a parallel to Dino Zoff, another celebrated Juventus goalkeeper from the Friuli region.
The former shot-stopper advised Vicario to avoid feeling pressured by the weight of the Juventus shirt, urging him to focus on his performance. He also dismissed Parma’s Suzuki as not yet ready for a move to a club of Juventus’ stature, suggesting the young goalkeeper needs further development. Tacconi was critical of Juventus’ earlier pursuit of Benfica’s Svilar, stating he would only make a “crazy” move for Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi.
Regarding the pursuit of Martinez, Tacconi acknowledged his quality but pointed to his age, 33, as a concern. He also expressed skepticism about Juventus’ continued interest in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kolo Muani, instead favoring Bologna’s Jesper Zirkzee as a more suitable attacking reinforcement. Tacconi concluded by emphasizing the need for Juventus to secure at least three high-quality signings to compete for the Serie A title, expressing hope that the club’s management will address the squad’s needs swiftly before the start of the new season.
