Juventus to reconsider permanent move for Emil Holm after impressive display
Juventus are reportedly prepared to reopen negotiations with Bologna over a permanent deal for on-loan defender Emil Holm following his standout performance against Atalanta. The 24-year-old Swedish wing-back, who joined Juventus on loan in January with a purchase option set at €15 million plus €3 million in add-ons, has forced a reconsideration of his future after a commanding display in a crucial match for Champions League qualification.
According to sources close to the club, the initial agreed fee is considered too high for Juventus's current financial strategy. However, Holm's recent form, particularly in the match against Atalanta where he provided an assist and won all eight of his defensive duels despite recently returning from a soleus muscle injury, has prompted the Turin hierarchy to potentially revisit the figures. His performance earned significant praise from manager Luciano Spalletti, who selected him over Teun Koopmeiners for the key fixture.
Holm's primary obstacle to a permanent move has been his injury record. Over the past two seasons, he has suffered nine separate muscular problems, causing him to miss 23 league matches. His physical durability remains the major question mark, but Spalletti's clear faith in the player is a significant factor. The Italian coach was instrumental in pushing for Holm's loan signing in the winter window to provide cover for the absent Weston McKennie and Dusan Vlahovic.
The financial negotiations could be facilitated by another loan deal involving Bologna. Juventus full-back Joao Mario, who is on a dry loan at Bologna, has revived his career under Thiago Motta, becoming a regular starter and scoring twice. Bologna are now open to keeping him permanently, potentially through a paid loan with a conditional obligation to buy for a total of €9-10 million. This separate transaction, which would be accounted for in the 2027 financial year, could provide Bologna with a capital gain and free up funds, possibly making them more flexible in negotiations for Holm.
For Juventus, securing Holm for a lower fee would represent a cost-effective solution for a right-sided player who has quickly adapted to Spalletti's system. His ability to contribute in both attack and defence fits the modern profile of a wing-back. The club's final decision is expected in early June, after evaluating Holm's performances across the final seven games of the season. His continued fitness and form will be the decisive factors in whether Juventus commit to making his stay in Turin permanent.
