Juventus train with focus on Atalanta amid McKennie suspension
Juventus have returned to training with immediate focus on Saturday's pivotal Serie A clash against Atalanta, despite concerns over the fitness of goalkeeper Mattia Perin and striker Dusan Vlahovic. The session at the JTC training centre was characterised by a positive atmosphere, as shown in the club's social media posts, with players engaging in finishing drills and a small-sided match.
The first to test his shooting was Fabio Miretti, who found the net with a powerful left-footed strike. He was followed by new signing Lois Openda, who placed a right-footed shot into the bottom corner, and Emil Holm, who also scored with his right foot. Winger Edon Zhegrova then curled a fine left-footed effort into the top corner, completing a sequence of high-quality finishes.
A mini-match followed, featuring players who saw little or no action in the recent win over Genoa. Among them, Jeremie Boga stood out with an impressive curled right-footed goal that left third-choice goalkeeper Carlo Pinsoglio with no chance. The training session had a notable spectator in midfielder Weston McKennie, who will be suspended for the Atalanta match after receiving a yellow card against Genoa, his fifth of the campaign, which triggered a one-game ban.
McKennie's absence presents a selection dilemma for coach Luciano Spalletti. The US international has been a consistent presence in the Juventus midfield this season, contributing with crucial energy and a goal in the recent fixture. His suspension likely opens the door for increased minutes for the likes of Miretti or Hans Nicolussi Caviglia in the engine room for a critical match in the race for Champions League qualification.
The session underscored the squad's depth and morale as they enter the final stretch of the season. Juventus currently sit in a strong position to secure a top-four finish, but the match against an always-dangerous Atalanta side represents a significant hurdle. The club confirmed the training took place under sunny skies, with the group appearing relaxed and focused on the challenge ahead, aiming to maintain their momentum without one of their key midfield assets.
