Kahn warns Bayern of 'intimidating' Bernabeu ahead of Madrid clash
Bayern Munich must navigate one of football's most daunting atmospheres when they face Real Madrid, according to club legend Oliver Kahn. The former Germany and Bayern goalkeeper has warned his old club about the unique challenge of playing at the Santiago Bernabéu ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday. Kahn, who made 632 appearances for the German giants, highlighted the intense pressure that awaits the Bundesliga side in the Spanish capital.
In an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, Kahn emphasised the psychological and physical toll of playing at the iconic stadium. "Ninety minutes at the Bernabéu are as exhausting as nowhere else," Kahn stated. He elaborated on the atmosphere, noting, "The crowd in Madrid is far more intense than in Barcelona; it feels like everything is pressing down on you. The atmosphere can be intimidating."
Kahn also pointed to Real Madrid's recent form as a source of danger. He suggested that the Spanish giants, having overcome a difficult period, are now a formidable force. "Real come from a period where they had to overcome many obstacles—there was criticism, unrest, a coaching change. And then, suddenly, success against Manchester City, and they feel they can turn their season around. That is exactly what makes Real so dangerous now," Kahn explained. This assessment comes as Real Madrid, under Carlo Ancelotti, have found form at a crucial stage in the season.
Bayern's historical record at the Bernabéu adds weight to Kahn's warning. The German club's last away victory against Real Madrid came in 2001, when a 1-0 win in the Champions League semi-final first leg was secured by a Javi Martínez goal. Since then, Bayern have struggled at the stadium, a history that will be on the minds of Thomas Tuchel's squad. The Bavarians will need to overturn this poor record to take a positive result back to Munich for the second leg.
The first leg in Madrid is set to be a tactical battle between two of Europe's most successful clubs. Bayern, currently trailing Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, have the Champions League as their last chance for silverware this season. The psychological edge of playing at the Bernabéu, as highlighted by Kahn, could be as significant as the on-field tactics. The return of the suspended Alphonso Davies is a boost for Bayern, but they will be without key defender Dayot Upamecano, who is suspended. The tie is finely poised, with the intimidating atmosphere of the Bernabéu set to play a decisive role in the outcome of this European heavyweight clash.
