Karol Mets has completed a free transfer to VfL Bochum following the expiration of his contract at St. Pauli, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Tuesday. The Estonian international joins Bochum after three seasons with St. Pauli, where he was a prominent figure in their promotion to the Bundesliga and subsequent top-flight campaign.
Mets, 33, made 33 appearances for St. Pauli in the recently concluded 2025/26 Bundesliga season, but was unable to prevent the club from finishing bottom of the table and suffering relegation to the 2. Bundesliga. A mainstay in the St. Pauli squad, he played a vital role in their return to the Bundesliga after a 13-year absence. The defender has also earned over 100 caps for Estonia, captaining the national team, though he did not participate in their recent Baltic Cup victory.
The move to Bochum offers Mets the opportunity to remain in the Bundesliga, despite St. Pauli’s demotion. Bochum have been active in the transfer market, bolstering their defensive options with the addition of both Mets and Yiğit Karademir from VfL Osnabrück. However, they have also seen experienced defenders Erhan Masovic and Kevin Vogt depart the club this summer, creating space within the squad.
St. Pauli are also reshaping their defense following relegation, securing the services of Marcus Mathisen from Magdeburg. The Hamburg-based club have also seen Hauke Wahl move to fellow relegated side Wolfsburg. The departure of Mets and Wahl represents a significant change for St. Pauli as they prepare for life back in the 2. Bundesliga, aiming to mount a swift challenge for promotion.
Mets’ arrival at Bochum provides valuable experience and leadership to their backline, filling a void left by the departing Masovic and Vogt. The transfer allows the Estonian captain to continue playing at the highest level, while St. Pauli begin the process of rebuilding after a disappointing season.
