Sebastian Kehl will not be joining Tottenham Hotspur as their new sporting director, according to reports from BILD. Negotiations between the former Borussia Dortmund chief and the Premier League club have concluded without an agreement being reached.
Talks between Kehl and Tottenham had been progressing for several weeks, but a divergence in strategic vision ultimately proved insurmountable. The German publication states that the two parties were unable to find common ground on the future direction of the club’s football operations. This outcome leaves Tottenham continuing their search for a replacement to oversee their recruitment and football strategy.
Kehl recently concluded his tenure as sporting director at Borussia Dortmund, stepping down from the role at the end of the 2023-24 season. During his time at Dortmund, he oversaw a period of relative success, including a Champions League final appearance in 2024, and was instrumental in identifying and developing young talent. His departure from the Bundesliga side came as a surprise to many, given his established position within the club.
Despite the breakdown in talks with Tottenham, Kehl’s future remains open. BILD reports that the 46-year-old is currently engaged in discussions with other leading international clubs regarding potential opportunities for the 2026-27 season. The identity of these clubs remains undisclosed at this time, but suggests Kehl is still highly sought after within European football. This indicates he is likely to take on a similar role at another top club in the near future.
Tottenham’s search for a sporting director has been ongoing since the departure of Fabio Paratici last year. The club has been linked with several candidates, but have yet to appoint a permanent successor. This latest setback will likely prompt a renewed effort to identify and secure a suitable candidate to lead their footballing strategy as they aim to build a competitive squad.
