Kevin Vogt has agreed to mutually terminate his contract with VfL Bochum at the end of the current season, bringing an end to his professional football career, the club confirmed. The decision comes as a result of ongoing health and injury concerns for the 34-year-old central defender.
Vogt, a native of Bochum, originally joined the club’s youth setup in 2004 and progressed through the ranks, making his Bundesliga debut for VfL Bochum in 2009. He amassed over 100 appearances for the club across all age groups, establishing a strong connection with the Ruhrpott region. The defender expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to begin and end his career with his hometown club.
“This decision is incredibly difficult for me,” Vogt stated, according to the club’s announcement. “Football has been my life for as long as I can remember. VfL Bochum has always been something special. I grew up here, I was able to become a professional here, and I was able to come home here at the end of my career. But my body has clearly shown me in recent months that things can no longer continue as I wish.”
Beyond his two spells with Bochum, Vogt enjoyed a successful career in the Bundesliga, featuring for FC Augsburg, 1. FC Köln, TSG Hoffenheim, Werder Bremen, and most recently, 1. FC Union Berlin. He accumulated over 300 Bundesliga appearances throughout his career, even experiencing Champions League football during his time with Union Berlin. Vogt’s versatility and experience made him a valuable asset to each of the clubs he represented.
The early termination of Vogt’s contract allows him to begin planning for his post-playing career, while Bochum can begin assessing options to strengthen their squad ahead of next season. Vogt’s departure marks the end of an era for the club, losing a player deeply rooted in its history and a seasoned professional on the pitch.
