Sami Khedira is in advanced negotiations to return to Real Madrid as an assistant coach under José Mourinho, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano. The former Germany international, 39, is expected to join Mourinho’s backroom staff, though details regarding a contract length are still being discussed, as per Sky Germany.
Khedira previously represented Real Madrid as a player between 2010 and 2015, becoming a key component in the midfield during a successful period for the club. He amassed 161 appearances for Los Blancos, registering nine goals and 13 assists. The German won La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League titles during his time in the Spanish capital.
He was a prominent figure for the German national team, earning 77 caps and scoring seven goals. Khedira was a part of the victorious 2014 World Cup squad, playing a significant role in midfield. He retired from professional football in 2021 after a spell with Hertha Berlin.
Mourinho and Khedira previously worked together at Real Madrid during the Portuguese manager’s first stint in charge of the club. The pair enjoyed a productive relationship, and Mourinho is reportedly keen to reunite with the experienced German as he embarks on his new project at the Bernabéu. The appointment would signal Mourinho’s intent to build a strong and familiar team around him.
While the agreement is reportedly in place, finalizing the specifics of Khedira’s contract remains the final hurdle. Should the deal be completed, it would mark a significant step in Mourinho assembling his coaching staff ahead of the upcoming season and provide a link to a successful period in the club’s recent history.
