Sami Khedira is set to return to Real Madrid as part of Jose Mourinho’s new coaching staff, according to reports in AS. The former Germany international midfielder will join the Portuguese manager’s team, bringing with him a wealth of experience both at the club and internationally. No financial details have been disclosed, as this is a staff appointment rather than a player transfer.
Mourinho, recently reinforced in his position by club president Florentino Perez, is reportedly focused on assembling a team of trusted individuals with a deep understanding of the Real Madrid environment. Khedira, who played for the club between 2010 and 2015, fits that profile, having been a key player during Mourinho’s first spell in the Spanish capital. He was initially brought to Madrid by Mourinho himself.
During his time with Real Madrid, Khedira contributed to a successful period for the club, winning a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, and a Spanish Super Cup. He formed a strong partnership in midfield and quickly became a fan favourite. Following his departure from the Bernabéu, the midfielder spent five seasons with Juventus, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the Serie A side’s midfield.
At Juventus, Khedira continued to demonstrate his quality and experience at the highest level, adding further to his understanding of professional football. Mourinho believes Khedira’s international experience and established relationship with him will be invaluable, not only in training but also in managing the Real Madrid dressing room. AS reports that the club had previously considered fellow former Madrid player Pepe for a role, but Khedira’s candidacy ultimately gained more traction, leading to an agreement.
The appointment signals Mourinho’s intent to build a strong and familiar support structure as he embarks on his latest chapter with Real Madrid. Khedira’s presence is expected to provide a bridge between the manager and the squad, fostering a positive and productive environment.
