VfL Bochum have extended the contract of defender Colin Kleine-Bekel to 2029, simultaneously announcing his loan return to Swiss Super League side FC St. Gallen for the 2026-27 season. The 23-year-old will continue his development with the reigning Swiss runners-up and cup winners after a previous loan spell with the club. Bochum confirmed the contract extension and loan move on their official website.
Kleine-Bekel initially joined Bochum in May 2025 after a breakthrough period with Holstein Kiel. He had established himself in Kiel’s first team, even contributing to their Bundesliga promotion, before making the move to the Ruhr region. The centre-back’s previous season was spent gaining experience with St. Gallen, where he made 16 appearances and scored one goal.
The extension to 2029 demonstrates Bochum’s faith in Kleine-Bekel’s potential, despite his continued development taking place away from the club. Bochum currently compete in the Bundesliga, and this loan arrangement allows Kleine-Bekel to secure regular playing time, which is crucial for his progression. The move to St. Gallen provides a familiar environment for the player, having already integrated into the team last season.
Kleine-Bekel is a former Germany U-21 international, earning five caps for the national youth team. He previously served as vice-captain for Borussia Dortmund’s U-19 squad, highlighting his leadership qualities from a young age. His career has been marked by consistent progression, moving from youth football to establishing himself in professional leagues.
This loan deal benefits both clubs, providing St. Gallen with a proven defender and allowing Bochum to nurture a promising talent while ensuring he gains valuable match experience. Kleine-Bekel’s continued development will be closely monitored by Bochum, with the expectation that he will eventually return to compete for a first-team place.
