Jürgen Klopp has confirmed he is in discussions with the German Football Association (DFB) regarding the vacant national team head coach position, following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation on Friday. The DFB announced Nagelsmann’s departure after Germany’s disappointing group stage exit at the World Cup, simultaneously revealing initial talks with Klopp as part of their succession planning.
Speaking to MagentaTV, Klopp acknowledged the approach from the DFB. “Yes, I can confirm the talks,” he stated. “Julian resigned, and the DFB is working on a succession plan and over the course of these deliberations, they have reached out to me.” The timing of the opportunity appears more favorable than in the recent past, as Klopp indicated he is now fully recharged after departing Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Currently, Klopp is under contract with Red Bull as Head of Global Soccer until 2029, a position he took after leaving Anfield. However, reports suggest a verbal agreement exists that would allow him to leave his current role should he accept the Germany job. Klopp addressed his contractual obligations, stating, “The situation is such that I have an existing contract with Red Bull. As a person, I am usually very happy to keep contracts.”
He also emphasized his interest in exploring the possibility further, acknowledging the challenges facing the national team are not solely attributable to Nagelsmann’s tenure. “I have also said that I am very interested in the discussions,” Klopp continued. “Those conversations will have to happen, and they will have to be intensive talks because, of course, the problems Germany were experiencing were not due to Julian Nagelsmann.” He praised Nagelsmann as “an extraordinary coach” and predicted future success in his career.
Klopp managed Borussia Dortmund from 2008 to 2015, achieving Bundesliga titles and reaching the Champions League final, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top coaches before his highly successful spell at Liverpool. His potential appointment would mark a return to international management, and a significant undertaking to revitalize the German national team following their recent struggles. The appointment of Klopp would be expected to immediately raise the profile and expectations surrounding the national team.
