The German Football Association (DFB) has held discussions with Julian Nagelsmann regarding his future as head coach of the national team following their disappointing round of sixteen exit at the World Cup, according to reports. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf confirmed a lengthy meeting took place with Nagelsmann, along with sporting director Andreas Rettig and Rudi Völler.
The discussions followed Germany’s elimination by Paraguay, a result described as falling short of expectations by Neuendorf. Nagelsmann himself expressed his dismay at the early exit and acknowledged the need for a thorough analysis of the team’s performance. “We agreed to meet again very quickly to analyze the situation,” he stated. “We will discuss the reasons why we did not exploit our potential, which exists, nor meet expectations.”
Speculation is now mounting that Jürgen Klopp could be considered as a replacement for Nagelsmann. While no formal approach has been made, Klopp’s availability following his departure from Liverpool at the end of the Premier League season makes him an attractive option for the DFB. Klopp has previously managed Borussia Dortmund, achieving considerable success in the Bundesliga, and is highly regarded within German football circles.
Nagelsmann was appointed as Germany manager in September 2023, tasked with revitalizing a team that had struggled in recent major tournaments. Prior to taking the national team role, Nagelsmann had established himself as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches during spells at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, known for his tactical innovation and attacking football. The DFB will now assess whether a change in leadership is necessary to rebuild the team and restore its competitiveness on the international stage. The outcome of the forthcoming analysis will likely determine whether Nagelsmann remains in charge or if Klopp, or another candidate, is appointed.
