Kompany hints at Bayern rotation ahead of crucial Real Madrid second leg
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has revealed he is considering squad rotation for this weekend's Bundesliga fixture against St. Pauli, with the decisive second leg of his side's Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid looming. The German giants secured a 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, with the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu scheduled for next Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Kompany confirmed he will assess his squad's fitness following their midweek exertions before finalising his team for the Bundesliga match on Saturday. "Honestly, I don't know yet – I need the latest information from training on how the boys feel," Kompany said. The manager emphasised that any changes would be consistent with his policy for the entire season, which has seen the squad's depth utilised throughout the campaign. "If we make one or two changes, it's only what we've been doing all season," he added.
Kompany stressed that any changes would not signify a diminished approach, stating his desire for the same intensity as the performance against Real Madrid. "I would like to have a team who are just as challenged as the one against Real – who have the same concentration, motivation and intensity. That's normally never a problem for us," he explained. The former Manchester City captain indicated that goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is expected to start against St. Pauli if he is fully fit. "If Manu doesn't feel any problems, he will continue. He has to stay in the flow," Kompany confirmed.
The potential for rotation is a logical move for Bayern, who hold a slender one-goal aggregate lead over Real Madrid. Protecting key players from injury and fatigue ahead of the decisive second leg at the Bernabéu is a clear priority. Kompany's comments suggest he will rely on the depth of his squad, a strategy he believes has been validated by the team's progress to this stage of the season. "We're only at this point on April 10th because the whole team has been involved," he stated, defending his rotational approach.
With the Bundesliga title race effectively over, Bayern's entire season now hinges on the European competition. A victory against St. Pauli would have little impact on their league position, making player management for the crucial European tie a logical and necessary strategy. Kompany's primary focus is clearly on navigating the two-leg tie against the Spanish champions, and the team selection against St. Pauli will be the first clear indicator of his priorities for the season's climax.
