Kompany likens Bayern celebrations to 'relegation playoff' after stunning comeback
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany described his team's celebrations after a remarkable 4-3 comeback win away to Mainz as reminiscent of a relegation playoff, praising the mentality required to overturn a three-goal halftime deficit. According to the coach, his players celebrated with intense emotion following the final whistle after a second-half performance he had deliberately engineered with key substitutions.
The victory marked only the second time in Bayern's history that they have recovered from being three goals down at halftime. The first half in Mainz saw the hosts thoroughly dominate, with Kompany admitting his side were fortunate not to be four or five goals behind. "Everything went wrong in the first half," Kompany said, though he noted the initial 20 minutes before Mainz's opening goal were not entirely poor.
Kompany revealed there was no detailed tactical analysis during the interval, instead focusing on the need for improved quality and a shift in mentality. He stated the team accepted the fight and discarded any fear of injuries that may have been inhibiting their play. The Belgian coach had pre-planned the introduction of three star substitutes—Michael Olise, Harry Kane, and Jamal Musiala—regardless of the scoreline at the break.
The decision proved decisive, as all three substitutes found the net in a brutal second-half display. Olise, in particular, delivered a moment of exceptional quality that drew specific praise from his manager. "Michael has set the bar high for himself, so I would've been disappointed if that didn't go in," Kompany said. "It shouldn't be normal, but he made us get used to it."
The comeback echoed a similar fightback Bayern produced in a recent match against Freiburg, suggesting a growing resilience within Kompany's squad. The result provides a significant morale boost ahead of a crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. The performance of the substitutes, especially Olise, also underscores the squad depth available to Kompany as the season reaches its climax, with the Bundesliga title race and European ambitions still in play.
